The Importance of Protecting your Inbox

Sarasota, FL - InboxAlarm, a Sarasota based email security company announces features that will keep your inbox safe from intruders.

Over the last year more companies and individuals have moved their data to a cloud storage solution. The move from storing data in a physical location to storing data in the cloud has many advantages but it also creates new risks that have not been addressed by established security companies.

Your email inbox is a gatekeeper of all your other accounts. It is important that you know immediately if you have an issue that might affect them. “We saw the role that your inbox plays in storing your valuable information,” Co-founder Janis Krums states, “and thought that there needs to be a solution that could protect and notify someone when a breach occurs.”

Three incidents and one scenario stand out; they show perfectly how important email security is:

· Sarah Palin:

o Incident: Personal email account was hacked because of an easy password recovery question.

o Result: Embarrassment of a potential Vice President. Personal and confidential data was breached.

· Twitter:

o Incident: A hacker broke into an email account without anyone noticing and started looking for password info for other sites and people.

o Result: With days to snoop around he was able to infiltrate the CEO’s account and release 310 internal and confidential documents.

· Phishing Attack:

o Incident: Sophisticated phishing scam breached 30,000 email accounts, including Gmail, Yahoo! and Hotmail.

o Result: Passwords revealed to email accounts, social networks, bank accounts.

· Who Knows Your Password?

o Scenario: How many people have you told your password to? Your Ex? Best Friend? Colleague? You probably have 2 to 3 passwords that you use for everything. How do you know that they are not looking at your confidential information?

o Result: Not knowing if you truly have privacy. Having an uneasy feeling that someone is spying on you.

InboxAlarm is prepared to make sure that you can breath easy again; we have a patent pending technology that will notify you when a breach occurs. In addition, we are adding features that will notify you of potential email scams that could affect you.

10,000 Hotmail Accounts Compromised

Uh-oh, this is not good.  Mashable just reported today that 10,000 Hotmail accounts were compromised when the login credentials (email address and password) were posted on a website.  Only addresses beginning with A and B were listed, so this could indicate that there are more compiled lists awaiting publication.  Check out the article here.

If you have a Hotmail account, you need to change your password ASAP!  The fact that so many accounts were compromised reflects many of the dangers and pitfalls of cloud computing:

A Little Background on the Twitter Hack

As we mentioned in our first post, the basic idea for Tripwi.re InboxAlarm sprang about because of the Twitter hack. For a dissection of how the site was attacked, Techcrunch has a very interesting article here.

But for the busy reader, here is a Spark Notes version:

  • Twitter’s fast rise to prominence made it a tantalizing target for hackers.  It grew from a scrappy upstart micro-blogging platform into a start-up superstar.  Along the way, several events assisted in propelling Twitter into the mainstream:

    • Plane Crash in Colorado
    • “Miracle on the Hudson” - more on this one later ;-)
    • The race to 1 million followers between Ashton Kutcher and CNN
    • Oprah’s discovery of Twitter
    • The Iran Election

Welcome to InboxAlarm!

This is our first post to the InboxAlarm Blog, although we’ve been hard at work building the site for the past 4 weeks.

We founded InboxAlarm because after reading so many news articles about the Twitter hack, something should have been in place to mitigate the colossal damage Hacker Croll wrought.  As it so happened, InboxAlarm was conceived shortly before a little excursion on Sarasota Bay.  Here’s a photo!
